Proudly made in Philadelphia, the Baja Special is an extremely powerful, smooth reel you can use for bottom-fish or deep water heavy jigging. Designed with the Baja angler in mind and modeled after PENN’s fabled Senator reel, the Baja Special’s bullet-proof design and durable components allow anglers to stop fish in their tracks day after day. The deep, narrow arbor considerably increases its line capacity giving that added piece of mind when you hook into a big fish.
Made In The USA
The Baja Special is built in our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania manufacturing center. Our experienced crew has been designing and producing durable, high-quality reels in this facility since 1932.
Are you bottom fishing or trolling? Are you looking for power or speed? The Squall Lever Drag’s Versa-Handle system allows you to choose how long the handle should be in less than a minute (tools are included with each reel). Assemble the reel in the long position for more power or assemble in the short position for more speed.

I have had one of these for a while and they are one of the best offshore reels ever...period! I am glad Penn decided to keep this in production. Tough to beat for jigging and bottom fishing for big fish!
This reel is butter smooth with plenty of cranking power and speed. I run 65lb braid with either 30lb mono or 15 yds of 30lb fluro top shot. This rig is a yo yoin machine tearing up tuna, rock cod, ling cod, etc all day long...can't beat Penn reliability either!
Owned this reel for app. 7 years as I bought it shortly after its intro. and it is my go to bottom rod in the Bahamas and SE Florida from 40-600 feet of water. Alternate between 30lb. and 65lb. braid (depth and specie dependent) w/ mono top shot at times. Very narrow spool so it is comfortable to fish all day, including jigging, as the frame does not interfere w/ your forearm. Thrilled to see they are still in production, and have also caught yellowfin tuna up to 60lbs. w/out 1 issue.
